Troughton & Sims/ London 6" Ivory Protractor / Scale / Rule A nice example. Most
sellers call these off as an navigation tool, and many are found in cased
Maritime / Navigation sets, or as an architect scale / rule.
This rule is marked Troughton & Sims/ London a well known English maker.
It is configured similar to a Architects Rule with numerous scales and a protractor
on the perimeter. Rules like this are usually found in boxed drafting sets, or traveling
Shagreen cases associated with navigation or architects. It has developed a
nice even yellow Patina, and the overall condition is good.

Stanley / Bell System No. 2101 A 10" Auger Bit Brace
Same as above. The ratchet system was frozen in both
directions because the original green grease had hardened. It now works just fine
after I went inside and cleaned out the hardened green grease with the help of
instructions found online at Georges Basement. His instruction are great,
and even though I have done this a dozen or so times, I refer back every
time as it is a bit tricky and his process makes it clear and easy.
The 2101 is considered by many users to be the best available. There are a lot of them out in the world as Bell must have given every field employee one, if not a new one every year.
Back when they were a dime a dozen and could be had for next to nothing, and
on a good day, that might still be true at some yard sale or flea, but mark
my words, and I speak from 50 or so years of experience, the ready supply is
coming to an end. They are not falling out of the door at garage sales, and
the days of finding a cheap one at whatever sale are coming to an end.
The time to get one reasonably is now. If not this one, then one of the ones
selling cheaper on eBay that will need to be gone through. They are getting
harder to find.

Very nice!! This is an early model with Rosewood handle, and the roller
guide that runs against the crank wheel, a feature that
was dropped on later models.
The chuck is nice, and it runs as smooth as one would want.
It appears the bolt or screw holding the small crank handle wood knob has
been replaced. 2 original bits in handle. It has the side handle. These
early models are much nicer than the later ones with added features and
nicer finish. The favorite hand drill of users.

& A. G. COES. 1841 Patent 15" Adjustable Nut Wrench
The head on this large 15" and early nut wrench is marked L. & A. G. COES, and
Worcester the earliest Coes stamp on one side, and "PATENT" on the other.
Loring Coes was granted his first wrench patent on April 16th 1841 and this
is an example of that first patent offering. He sold out to his
brother in 1869. Characteristics of this wrench and the way it is
marked date it as pre Civil War and from the 1850s if not the 1840s.
No damage or issues. This earliest stamp
this example has is very seldom seen.
The finish on the handle is original. The jaws are near perfect. As nice as one could hope for.

Hall
1879 Patent Adjustable Face Vise
The patent # is 219,719.
Mr. Hall claimed, and the patent shows, a vise that has adjustable jaw faces.
After describing a typical hand
vice in his patent application, Mr. Hall goes on to say he realizes there are other vices
with adjustable faces but that his is different. You will have to read how for yourself
as it was kind of a word salad. https://patents.google.com/patent/US219719
The datamp site www.datamp.org/patents/advance.php?pn=219719&id=59386&set=9
also has the patent, and a note that the vise is not known to have been produced.
I did manage to find another example but no more info on this patented vise.
I did find info indicating Mr. Hall also had a patent for a quick adjust Vise called the Sudden Grip Vise.
The patent is US Patent: 140,269. That vise was produced by Parker.
This vise is marked on the head with the patent info.
It seems, in the actual construction, Mr. Hill left out making the jaws
adjustable and simply went with replaceable jaws. He accomplished that by machining out the back of the
jaw to fit over the round face of the receiver. An action that considerably
weakened the actual vise jaw.
When I first saw this vise I thought the round
jaw on one side was the patent feature. Later I realized that the vise
jaw on one side is missing. A lot of metal or meat
was machined out so it could fit over the roundness of the jaw receiver.
That round receiver face was
meant to provide the adjustable feature but there is no room for movement
in the jaw as the patent shows or calls for. In the finished product the
jaws seem are simply removable or
replaceable unless I am missing something.
I imagine,
by the time the jaw broke on this vise, that probably cost more than the fixed
jaw models around, that Mr. Hall was out of business
and replacements were not readily available.
A pretty rare piece for the vise collection.
