Frictionless Metal Co. CollectionFrictionless Metal Co. Collection   The Frictionless Metal Co was based in Richmond VA and made Babbitt bearing metalFrictionless Metal Advertising for use in large machinery prior to widespread availability of ball bearings.

What I am offering here is a collection Frictionless Metal Co. pieces assembled over the years by a collector of levels. One of the products Frictionless Metal Co put out were small decorated advertising levels produced for them by Starrett. They are considered hard to find. They are on the left below 2 examples of the product they made, Babbitt ingots.  Those levels alone generally sell for 50 -100.

Buying one level probably lead to the start of this collection which includes two Babbitt ingots, 2 of the levels,  2 blotters, numerous used letter envelopes with advertising graphics, a 1901 large poster calendar, and the very rare good luck horseshoe advertising clock seen in the last pics. The clock is not working. Check all the pics.

19th Century Antique Carpenters Work Bench19th Century Antique Carpenters Work Bench  This antique carpenter's work bench is approx. 80" long 2' deep and 33" tall. It has working vices at both ends. The vise on the left is 18" wide. On the right the vise wraps the corner. The base is original w dowelled and bolted joint construction. The top lifts off and the base comes apart to make moving it easier. Great patina and wear. Will make for a great accent piece, or put it back to work. The only apology is the missing rods to operate the vices, an easy fix.

Barnes Foot Powered Former / ShaperW. F. & J Barnes Former - Foot Powered Shaper This unusual Barnes foot powered former is in great condition.  There are areas with some caked on dirt and grease, but most of the original paint and decorations remains.  Much of it visible now.  It comes with several new belts, and also a box of cutters that are the correct size. The table is original right down to a couple of tight age cracks.

Barnes first introduced their former in the 1870s and they were offered into the 1930s. The first model was run by a round belt, but this is the improved model that was powered by a flat belt with holes. There is a very informative and comprehensive discussion of these machines at the website http://www.footpoweredmachinery.com/manufacturers/barnes-wfj/machines/formershaper/   That article is well worth the read.

It has a great look. I see no casting problems or cracks. The table is original.  Later tables were larger and more square. The cast iron seat is damage free. It spins freely.  I can break it down and box it, but imagine shipping is going to be several hundred unless you are here on the west coast. This Barnes Former / Shaper will be a welcome addition to the advanced antique tool collection.

Chicago Watch Tool Co. No. 5 Foot WheelChicago Watch Tool Co. No. 5 Foot Wheel  This antique cast iron foot powered flywheel was designed to power a watchmakers lathe as typically seen set up in a watchmakers bench.  I could not find any other exact examples like it, but did find an illustration in a reprint catalog that gave the model #. Made to drive a single 1" - 1.5" leather belt. The inscription cast into the frame reads "CHICAGO WATCH TOOL CO."  The most unusual thing about this flywheel is that it has a pendulum drive. The user simply rocks his foot back and forth and a mechanism not unlike that of a steam engine connecting rod drives the wheel. The cast iron wheel is 21" dia.  The operation with nothing hooked up is almost effortless.  It has a great look.

Boley Leinen Watchmakers Lathe w/ AccessoriesBoley Leinen Watchmakers Lathe w/ Accessories   Boley Leinen is a well known and respected German maker of watch makers tools, lathes, and accessories.  Their lathes are considered by many to be the Rolls Royce of Watchmakers Lathes.  This example is in virtually new unused condition.  The box seen is original and marked with the company name.  All of the additional pieces in the first pic are included and do not fit into the box, and do not have a box of their own.  I do not know the specific names of many of the pieces or their function.  We will let the pics tell that story.
