Patented
1932 Charcoal Iron with Embossed Stars
This is a handsome
iron and in super nice condition. I seriously doubt if it was ever
fired up. I think it's a George Finn patent from the looks of the
lever-activated round holes on the top that serve as operable air vents,
his signature design. This must have been when he was in his "stars
and stripes" phase, and displays as a great looking item of historic Americana!

Finn
Patent Charcoal Iron
Another example of the Finn Patent iron above
in not quite as pristine condition, but still very nice and will detail
up even nicer. It has the lever activated round vents on the lid,
and marked with the 10 stars on the top as well.

George
Finn Patented Charcoal Iron
George Finn of Newark, NJ received two patents
for this charcoal iron---in 1914 and 1916. The round vents are
raised and instead of operating by means of a lever, like his later
model (above) they are operated by moving a tab that you can barely get
to located under the ends of the handle. This one is in super
condition!

Marvel Patented
1924 Charcoal Iron
This is a great looking irons with a great
matching trivet having the cutout name of the
iron. It just seems so odd that people were playing around looking
for the perfect iron and pulling patents with charcoal as the fuel
source as late as 1924. Did they think electricity was a fleeting
thing? It is a Marvel!!

"The
Elictro" Patent Pending Charcoal Iron
I assume from the name the inventor / maker of this
charcoal iron was aware of electricity, but probably did not think he
had anything to worry about. Who wouldn't want to push around a
double smoke stack smelly lit fire? I imagine the thought of
electricity at the time was not "clean, simple, and efficient", but rather
"dangerous, expensive, and new". Better to stick with what we know,
and just make the name sound like that new fangled idea.
The double chimney is a variation of a design we see from time to time, but a name we have never seen.
It is a rare iron!

Sarah
Waterman Patent
1889 Thermometer Charcoal Iron
This is a very rare iron. I have only seen
or had 3 of these in 20 some years. I have only seen one other sold
from a major collection at auction. I
first found this iron about 15 years ago in upstate New York and sold it to
Norm Kelley that winter when we came back to CA. He was one of the best
buyers around back then, and we saved him some stuff each year to sell
when we returned to CA for the winter.
The condition is
superb with nearly 100% of the original nickel. The thermometer is
original and good. It is marked with the patent date of July 9th
1889. The other two of these I had were marked "Pat Appl'd For", so we know that there were at least
two different
production runs, but I doubt more than just a few were made either time.
In addition to the patent date it is also marked #7 for the size. The
patent holder was a woman from Milwaukee, and the patent number is
406,608 if you care to look it up. The patent calls for a
different design of venting than this iron has, but the idea for the
grate and rear door are the same.
This iron represents cutting
edge technology for its time. Electricity was but a dream, and
they were barely refining oil yet, and the supply of whale oil was
running out. Charcoal was the way to go, and Sarah added a
thermometer so you would know just how hot an iron you were working
with. Here was a way to watch how hot the coal was burning
just below your hand as you did the ironing chores. What a
comforting and advanced thought.

"Eclipse" Charcoal Iron
Here is another charcoal iron that was patented
after 1900. It has a couple of neat design features, but seems a bit
like adding another spark plug to a gas engine instead of looking at an
alternative since the oil supply is drying up. Anyway electricity
relegated this better idea to the realm of collectability.
These can be found with a fluting attachment, and we have one of those
listed elsewhere. But interestingly enough this model is marked
"Patented Aug. 25 1903" while the other model just says "Patent Pending
1903". Somebody rubbed black paint or stoveblack on the irons but
it looks to be nickel plated underneath and will probably clean up
nicely.

1917 " The Ever Ready" Charcoal Iron
It just seems so odd to think there was not
electricity around when this fellow got his idea, and proceeded to have
who knows how many made to fill a perceived market demand. I
will bet he did not die rich from the proceeds from this idea.

Brass Charcoal Iron
There aren't too many all brass charcoal irons to
be found. Brass was easier to cast than iron, but typically the
only brass irons you find are box / slug irons. This charcoal
irons is unadorned and undecorated, but has an impressive look and a
good looking unusual latch on the front end. And a rear damper
with the face of an old man.
