Combination Charcoal Flatirons w/ Fluters

Combination Charcoal Flat Iron Fluter IronCombination Charcoal Flat and Fluting Iron Marked "Geo. Wallace  Edmond, Oklahoma"  In the many years I have bought and sold antique irons I have never see any iron---flatiron, charcoal iron, fluter or any other type---marked with the name that is on the heat shield of this great combination iron.  Whether it was the name of the patentee or the manufacturer I don't know, but in beautiful stenciled lettering it very clearly reads "Geo. Wallace  Edmond, Oklahoma".  That in itself is pretty unusual---how many other irons do you know of that hail from OK?  I can't think of any right off the top of my head.  Perhaps this could even be the owner's name where the manufacturer, as a marketing gimmick, offered their irons up monogrammed so to speak, much as the winemakers will personalize the label of your bottle of wine today.  I can imagine that by the time this was produced the market for charcoal heated irons in the modern day American home was thinning down rapidly and the makers would do almost anything to move another one off the shelf.

The condition of this combination iron is amazing!  Rarely do you find any charcoal iron looking this good.  Given the nature of their use they are typically found with the nickel plating all but gone and with all the other expected signs of having had a fire smoldering within.  This example looks to have seen very little if any use.

Charcoal / Fluting IronCharcoal Heated Classen Bros. & Co. Combination Flatiron / Fluting Iron  This company operated out of Ithaca, NY, and proudly so marked this iron. And it looks to have seen very little use because the tolework stenciling on the heat shield is near 100%.  The iron itself is quite substantial and very well-made.  It's complete with its original sideplate fluter, which is marked "Pat Apld For".  The rocker portion may be a replacement from a different Classen combo iron---the wood of the handle is a somewhat lighter color than the wood grip of the iron itself---but nonetheless it meshes perfectly with the plate and completes the combination feature.

Antique Charcoal IronUnmarked Combination Charcoal Iron / Fluter   While the Pease has the rocker fluter built in to the handle / heat shield, this variant came with a separate auxiliary one.  The fluter plate on this model is a positive mount, sliding over two screws on the side.  On the Pease and a few others it is made to snap into place with a wire hook over the ends.  So, they look similar but are different.  Everybody it seems had a better idea!

Ideal Charcoal IronPatented "Ideal" Combination Charcoal Iron / Fluter   The Ideal is a nice variant with a cute stubby chimney.  It is marked "Pat Apld For 1905".   I am still trying to find pictures of everyday people walking around with fluted clothes.  They had the irons, they must have used them.........

Combination Fluter Charcoal IronPease "Lookalike" Combination Charcoal Iron / Fluter   This charcoal iron has a removable wire clip on fluter plate and the handle has the rocker fluter built in.  In every way it looks like a Pease, but it is unmarked.  An early version perhaps?  Or a copy cat?  The white residue you see is the remains of a mud bee nest.  He must have gotten in via the unusual 4-way vent system on the rear.

Large Combination Charcoal Iron FluterFaultless Self Heating Charcoal Iron   This is a larger than normal charcoal heated combination flatiron and fluter.  It measures close to 9" long.  A tailors iron???  A lever under the heat shield operates the vents.  It has an extra long fluter sideplate.  The back lift off gate is marked with the name Faultless and the patent date of Dec. 18 '06.  I have seen this iron marked with the name "Base Burner".  And I think every one I have seen or had has been missing the rocker fluter part---this one is too.
