Primitive Garden Forks
This style
of garden fork comes in all different sizes and styles. Each one is handmade
and unique in some way. These were all part of the collection hanging in the
store for over 30 years. Note the one on the right has steel tips to make
it stronger, or to hide repairs. Neat!!

Primitive
Shovel & Fork
The shovel is carved
from 1 piece of wood. It is American, or at least was bought as such back
in the 70's.
I am not sure of the intended purpose of the fork. Probably
to lift some light material like hay into the wagon. It is in very nice condition
and not a form you find or see very often.
Neat!!

Corn
Planter
This not complete.
It is one of the rarest and most desirable of all corn planters that can be found.
What you see is all I have. What is here is complete and nice.
What you need is another one, and the cross bar. The idea being whoever was
wearing it could get 2 times the work done if he could keep track of what he was
doing and keep his balance as he walked down a row pulling levers and -------.

American
Corn Huskers by Jim Moffet
This book
was published in 1994 in one run and is now long out of print. It is
the authoritative work on the subject of corn huskers, their patents, and their
development by Jim Moffet. Who'd a thunk that there could be so many different
variations of such a simple tool. The book opens with a fascinating story
of a corn husking contest held on the farm back in the 1920's. It says over
20,000 people attended and that they served 50,000 or more hamburgers that day.
Can you imagine? It is a great book, very informative and has some great illustrations.

4'
Brass Grain Test
These devices come in different lengths and I have seen 10'
models. This one has a maker tag on the top. They were used to check
the quality of a load in either a cart, rail car, or wagon when it was
brought to market.. Push it
through the grain to the bottom, turn the handle and the grain from that
level fills the rod so it can be inspected after withdrawing it.
Seems like some folks, weather it was the farmer, or the delivery guy
sometimes loads the wagon with different grades of material, and i bet they
were not putting the bad stuff on the top. I had
a friend take me to a modern grain distributin point where they were loading
over 100 cars headed to Texas to be processed. It was quite an
operation, and there were not any of these in evidence.

Fence
Stretcher
These devices come in
a myriad of different designs, all meant to make the homestead more secure, or at
least the fence more evenly stretched after something broke through, or you were
fencing in that last 40 acres. A step back in time.

Rat Trap Note the cast
iron hinges at the sides that this early trap has. OSHA probably
outlawed it as it is powerful enough to break a finger, or take off a toe,
and not the rats. A step back in time.
