Small
Pattern Makers Plane
This is a very unusual size and form pattern makers plane. It has 5
bottoms and 4 cutters. It appears to be made of some sort of fruitwood.
It is marked W. Crompton in two places on the body which I assume was the maker
/ owner maker. The fitted box for the cutters is very nice and the
cutters are well made and sharp. One of them is marked Jessup & Son Cast
Steel "Green Label". The rest look to be from the same stock but are unmarked.
Overall the plane is 8" long, and the cutters are 1 1/4" wide. The bottom
of the plane has two brass slot affairs let in that locks the the bottoms to
the base of the main body. The plane is sound and nice
overall.

Simplex
Pattern Makers Plane
This to is a unusual form pattern makers plane. It has 6
bottoms and cutters cut in a concave as opposed to convex as is more typical
with these planes. Each of the bottoms is marked / stamped with a radius #.
They are 5, 8, 12, 18, 24, and 48, It appears to be a manufactured
piece with the casting of the plane body carrying the name Simplex. The cutters
look to be homemade andare a bit crude looking. The plane is sound and nice
overall.

Pattern Makers Plane
This pattern makers plane is the nicest and most complete
of the lot I picked
up recently from the consignor. It also looks to be the earliest as well.
It has 14 marked bottoms and 15 cutters that were made from Stanley block plane
cutters. The logo on most of the cutters is the half circle in Block
letters which would date them from the late 1880's. One has a slightly
later logo, and one seems to be cut straight and not part of the set. Each of the wood bottoms is marked / stamped with a
radius #. They are 4, thru 48, The bottoms are held in place
with four countersunk screws in each base. The plane measures
12" long and utilizes a cam like pin in the adjuster slots on the back of
the cutters to adjust the depth of cut. The lever cap is a solid casting
and again there is a Stanley like locking feature where when you move the lever
at the top, and the eccentric nature or thickness of the round portion locks the cap
and cutter in place. Much like an early 9 1/2. The handle and knob
are very nice. The plane is sound and nice
overall. A very nice example.

Pattern Makers Plane
This pattern makers plane is made from a Stanley #3 that was adapted to this
purpose. It is very well done and in nice condition. The maker cut
a slot in the front and another just behind the frog so the different bottoms
could be locked on. There are 8 different radius bottoms, and 8
well made tapered cutters. The bottoms are marked 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16,
and 20. The cutters are unmarked as to maker and it looks like the maker
of the plane ground
and polished any cutter maker name off, but they are early matching manufactured
plane cutters. The plane is sound and nice
overall.

This pattern makers plane is made with Stanley #3 Type 5 first lateral parts
fitted to a cast brass / gunmetal body. It is very well done and in
nice condition. The maker cut a slot in the front and another just behind
the frog so the different bottoms could be locked on. There are 4
different bottoms, and 1 cutter made from a Sargent cutter to fit the
convex bottom now on the plane. The extra bottoms are unmarked and
all of them seem flat. This may have been a project that was not completed
or ?????. The plane is sound and nice
