Singer / SewHandy
Toy Sewing Machines
1950's
Singer SewHandy Toy Sewing Machine Mannequin / Mannikin Set in Original Box What little
girl wouldn't have wanted one! The set has everything needed to become
America's next fashion designer. A step back in time. How many little
girls think about designing, and then sewing up an
outfit. Most of today's 10 year olds would be moving the clothes around in a
computer program. Or
else just go pick it up at the mall. My how times have changed. What a
difference 50 years makes.
The black Singer toy sewing machine dates
from the 1950's and is in excellent condition. It's super shiny and
clean and complete with its original instruction booklet and the
original patterns. The original suitcase is in very good condition. The
mannequin is in great condition, and still pliable and ready to be
used. A very cute piece!

Blue
Singer Sew Handy 20-10 Toy Sewing Machine
Singer made about 5 different color machines in the US. Black is
the most common and most popular, then beige, crinkle tan, and finally
the red
and
blue versions. The red and blue are much rarer than the others, and at one point were
bringing crazy money. As with what folks have learned to do with
the 221 Featherweights---repainting them in numerous fantasy colors---that
practice crept into the toy sewing machine market as well, probably
harmlessly in some cases and with profit motives in others. I
think that is what we have here. There is something odd about the paint job that is not typical when looked at carefully. At
first look it looks fine, but with a critical eye you can see minor
irregularities. The paint is near perfect, and yet the stitch plate has
been buffed. The real giveaway though is
the matching C clamp straight off the hardware store shelf---they
even forgot to paint part of the threads and real ones are marked Singer
or Simanco. Anyway it looks nice, and is
priced to reflect what it is.

Green
Singer Sew Handy 20-10 Toy Sewing Machine
In addition to the several odd colors Singer made in the US they made even
more colors for the French and English markets. They made a red one in France
that is a bit different in finish from the American one as well. I
remember seeing the first one and thinking it was wrong---it
wasn't. For the English they made this unusual mint green color one and
also a white
one. These odd colors are very rare and this is only the second one of this color I have
ever seen or had. The condition is super, and you will not see
another in a long time.

Unusual French Singer Sew Handy
20-10 Toy Sewing
Machine in Box These unusual colored
1950's Singer Sew Handy TSM's are rarely found in this country, and are
certainly less common than the beautiful little red and blue American
Singer toys that you are more apt to find. I have seen the French
Singers in several pale metallic colors before. I would call this
one a silvery metallic green.
I have included a number of
pictures so you can get a good look at this pretty machine.
Condition-wise it's very, very nice with just a little paint missing
from the edges of the clamp and from the V-notch on the machine's base.
The decals are excellent and it is complete with the colorful French
language instructions. The
box cover is in good condition overall with some minor edge scuffs. The
bottom corners / seams of the box are weak, and it needs a bit of attention. If you
are a serious Singer collector, this one is a must!

Singer
Model 20 4-Spoke Toy Sewing Machine This toy sewing machine, dating from
1910, was the very first model toy sewing machine that Singer produced.
It is recognizable
by the design of the handwheel which is referred to the X-wheel or the 4-spoke.
This example looks like it saw little or no
use as it is in excellent condition and complete with its clamp and tattered
instructions. The black
paint is shiny, the gold decals are excellent, and the nickeled metalwork is
bright with no rust. This early Singer toy sewing machine is
in top-notch collector condition.

Singer
Model 20 w/ Red Wheel This unusual
variation is pictured in Glenda Thomas's book with a comment that there
is no information as to
authenticity or origin. That example was in the collection of a top German
collector. I have heard of others, but this is the first I have
had. The owner had no information or notes as to where her example
came from, and so we must take it for what it is.

Singer Model 20 USA / Made in Turkey
I have seen so few of these over the years i do not know if this is a
variation or how they were all done. It is one of the later Made
in Turkey machines that Singer had made for them, but it is also marked
USA. Go figure. They are rare enough and have a sense of
legitimacy to them that has made them collectible in their own right.
The instructions are included as well.
