Cast Iron Child's / Toy / Travel Size Antique Sewing Machines

Foley & Williams "F & W Automatic" Cast Iron Sewing Machine  This machine dates from the very early 1900's and should hardly be called a "toy", although it measures just 7" tall.  It is really well engineered and made, and was marketed as being the ideal machine for use by both children learning to sew and their mothers who wanted a small and reliable machine for mending and other small sewing tasks.  It proudly proclaims on the label of the box that it is the "Perfect Chain Stitch Machine High Speed, Strong and Substantial".  Note from the groove in the handwheel that it was designed so it could be set up in a treadle and foot-powered, as well as used as a handcrank on the tabletop.

This example is in wonderful condition, beautifully decorated with ornate gold and red scrollwork decals.  It is complete with its unusual horizontally-mounted removable spool pin holder, a piece that often goes missing on these machines.  It is complete with its original box which, although missing the lid and showing wear and splits to the wood, still retains its label.  Amazingly this machine sold for $5.00 in its day---twice the amount most other small cast iron sewing machines by this and other manufacturers were sold for.  Be sure to look at all of the pictures---this sewing machine is a real beauty and a top shelf piece for any collection!                    Click for Pic          Click for Pic          Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic

Small "Linnea" Antique Sewing Machine  The "Linnea" was manufactured in Chicago, Illinois by Bergbom & Roberg and I imagine it must have been named for the daughter or wife of one of the company's bigwigs!  It is a lovely small handcrank machine that dates from the 1920's, and it is one that is not very frequently found.  The most distinctive feature of this antique machine is its elegant footed base outfitted with a little wooden and tin drawer for holding thread and accessories.  I have only had this machine twice in the past, and both times the drawer was either missing or had been re-made.  This example is complete with the original drawer.  Overall the condition is very good, although there is some loss to the gold decals and some have turned silvery from cleaning.  But it still looks great and retains over 80% of it's original paint and decoration.                       Click for Pic          Click for Pic          Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic

"Mother's Helper" Cast Iron Child's Sewing Machine  The New Home Sewing Machine Co. manufactured the "Little Helper" in the 1920's.  This small child's machine is marked differently and is quite rare.  I have seen dozens of the "Little Helper, but this is the first i have seen or had marked this way.    It features a removable stand and features a lockstitch, which is unusual as typical vintage children's machines only sewed a chainstitch.  It is finished in black enamel and has lovely gold decoration and script.  It will make a great addition to the collection.           Click for Pic          Click for Pic          Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic     Click for Pic

Antique "Original Express" Hand-Crank Cast Iron Sewing Machine  This beautiful and elegant antique sewing machine is thought to have been manufactured by the firm of Guhl and & Harbeck of Hamburg, Germany right around 1900, and it was also marketed by the Casige sewing machine company.  Measuring just under 12" across it is slightly larger than most "toy" machines, and was promoted as a machine that could be used by adults as well as by children.  It is decorated in gold with a lovely footed base.  This is an antique sewing machine that is not typically found in the US.               Click for Pic          Click for Pic          Click for Pic

Muller 19 Cast Iron Child-Size Antique Sewing Machine  This cast iron hand crank sewing machine was manufactured by the F.W. Muller factory of Berlin, Germany during the early years of the 1900's.  They called it their Model 19, and decorated it with lovely and colorful geometric and floral patterns that would appeal to the hearts of children and adults alike.  One of the interesting features of the Muller 19 was that the base was hinged to allow the head of the machine to lean back to allow tabletop access to the underside mechanism.  You will love the condition of this machine!                    Click for Pic          Click for Pic          Click for Pic        Click for Pic
