Misc. Antique & Vintage
Sewing Birds / Sewing Clamps / Third Hands

Sewing birds / sewing clamps make for a great antique collectible.

Most of the antique sewing birds / sewing clamps listed on these pages originate from two different long time / old time collections of antique and vintage sewing clamps and antique sewing accessories.  There is a near endless variety and no one collection could ever have them all.  There is a collection of sewing clamps in Lincroft, NJ at Brookdale Community College's Monmouth Museum that numbers over 400 and another larger one that the Smithsonian has.

Sewing clamps / birds can be utilitarian and very plain and simple, or figural, very complex and decorative, or all manner of forms and combinations in between.  Each of the sale pages we have is focused on a different form or style, from figural birds, to other animals, to those made of ivory, or those with just simple clamps  and more.

Please be sure to visit all the different pages as there are many to see and we have broken them up into different categories.

Large Wooden Shaker Style Embroidery Hoop Clamp

It was suggested to me that this embroidery hoop clamp might be Shaker.  It is certainly of that style and construction.  And there are pencil markings on the underside which may be initials, or something else---I just can't tell.  The body resembles a small wooden barrel with the inside cut out to insert over and clamp onto the tabletop edge.  The threaded screw at the top adjusts the tightness of the opening that will hold an embroidery hoop.  Beautiful, and practical!

Cast Iron Embroidery Hoop ClampCast Iron Embroidery Hoop Clamp Here is the later manufactured version of  a embroidery clamp.  These are unmarked and you oftentimes see them being sold as something else, but that is what they are---I have seen ads and the patent for them before.  It is a great design with the ability to swivel to any angle with the ball socket you see.  Very nice, and a must have if you are doing embroidery, cross stitch, rug hooking, or I have seen them set up with a ring and used to display other sewing accessories.
