Sewing Clamp Thread Winders

Sewing birds / sewing clamps make for a great antique collectible.

Most of the antique sewing birds / sewing clamps listed on these pages originate from two different long time / old time collections of antique and vintage sewing clamps and antique sewing accessories.  There is a near endless variety and no one collection could ever have them all.  There is a collection of sewing clamps in Lincroft, NJ at Brookdale Community College's Monmouth Museum that numbers over 400 and another larger one that the Smithsonian has.

Sewing clamps / birds can be utilitarian and very plain and simple, or figural, very complex and decorative, or all manner of forms and combinations in between.  Each of the sale pages we have is focused on a different form or style, from figural birds, to other animals, to those made of ivory, or those with just simple clamps  and more.

Please be sure to visit all the different pages as there are many to see and we have broken them up into different categories.

Cut Steel Sewing Clamp Thread WinderCut Steel Thread Winder / Spool Sewing Clamp Cut steel is a medium that originated in Europe and is thought to have been introduced as early as the 16th century.   It has a great look, and it was mostly used for jewelry, pins, or buckles, and to find other objects in this medium is quite unusual.  This antique thread winder is about 6" tall and has a wonderful faceted design of leaves on a vine with faceted and polished edges that shimmer and "glows" in the light.  It is a wonderful example and displays very nicely.

2 Polished Steel & Wood Thread Winders / Spools2 Polished Steel & Wood Thread Winders / Spools These are about the same size as each other but slightly different in makeup.  The seamstress or sewer would have these set up for large pieces of work to have a ready supply of thread at hand for the project underway.  These would date from the19th century or before, and are very well done.

Polished Steel Sewing Clamp Netting HookPolished Steel Sewing Clamp Netting Hook Here is a another example of a lot of work and embellishment for such a simple tool with a simple task in mind.  A nail in the top of the table would have sufficed, but someone instead put hours into forming and decorating this small sewing clamp /  tool.   Nice.
