A note on shipping: I ship most iron in fixed rate Priority boxes. There are two sizes of these boxes available now. One, two or sometimes even 3 or 4 irons can fit in the new larger fixed rate box making shipping quite reasonable.
Monitor No. 8 DP Iron with "Turned Up" Points This unusual and hard to find flat iron is named after the famous Civil War era armored warship it resembles! I have never seen one names the Merrimack. I suppose the spoils go to the winner only. A great piece of Americana and well as a great collectible sad iron! Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic

AGA English Enameled Flatiron with Removable Top / Handle A bit unusual in form, this black and ivory color enameled iron is one of those "transitional era" pieces. The maker wanted to give it the look of a "modern" electric iron, but it is not electric at all. To heat you would warm the nickel or chrome plated base on a stove or heater. You could unlatch the handle portion and remove it to allow it to be kept comfortably cool. There are also three vent holes in the handle for that flow-through ventilation. A new take on an old idea! Belgian Teardrop Shaped Flatiron This solid bodied iron which hails from Belgium has great form! The base measures about 7 1/2" long and 4 1/2" or so at its widest. The picture shows a small amount of surface oxidation which wiped right off with a rag. Note the nicely defined brass cap at the end of the wooden handle. Click for Pic

Hood's Patented Soapstone Iron Phineas Hood of New Hampshire was a really inventive guy. While everyone else was thinking "iron" as the material of choice for fabricating an iron, Mr. Hood decided that soapstone would be better. I don't think his idea really took off, and that's all the more reason his irons are highly sought after by today's collectors. Here are two examples of his soapstone irons, in two different sizes. Both are marked with the 1877 patent date as well as his name. I think the larger one is even harder to find than the other. It has a small crack in the casting near where the handle bolts onto the base, but the handle is stable and secure. And to complete the set is an unusual soapstone trivet. Good ..... $175.00 each and $25 for the trivet
Early Primitive "Slave" Iron This style iron is commonly referred to as a "slave" iron, and legend has it that there was a bell in that bulbous handle that would ring the whole while that the iron was in use. If the mistress of the house didn't hear the ringing she knew someone was slacking off. I don't know if that story is true, and I don't hear any wringing coming from the handle of this iron, but it is early and primitive and has a lot of character and a great look! ML-PSI-1
Very Good ..... $45.00
