Electric Sad / Pressing Irons

Saunders Silver Streak Electric IronsSaunders Silver Streak Electric Glass Irons  The Saunders Silver Streak Irons are the best known, most desirable and most sought after of all machine age electric irons. They were introduced during WWII in an effort to reduce the use of scarce metal resources.  They were produced by the Saunders Machine and Tool Co. of New York utilizing glass bodies provided by Corning glass Co.  They came in a range of colors including red, green, blue, silver and more.  They have a great look and sense to them, but in the end were not well received and were found to be very fragile.  They were discontinued shortly after the war, and the company just seemed to fade into obscurity leaving behind one of the most sought after of ironing collectibles.

Vintage Electric Iron1930's Janis Iro-Case "Suitcase Iron" This has to be one of the "best" and craziest ideas in pressing iron manufacture history!  As long as you remembered your suitcase you would never forget to bring your travel iron, because the handle of the suitcase is actually a real electric iron.  No need to bring along a travel iron.  Unlatch the handle from the suitcase and voila, the iron removes, electric cord and all, and you're ready to press your outfit.  How do travelers today get along without one!

The manufacturer hailed from Wisconsin.  I have seen these in quite the variety of coverings, from tweeds, plaids, and striped fabrics to slick leather or faux-leatherette, and in a variety of colors inside and out.  Collect them all!

This example is in nice condition, though there is a little staining here and there.  It's ready to display. Or even go with you on your next trip.

Vintage Electri IronAbesto Electric Iron  The tag on the back has lots of info in addition to the 1909 patent date.  This is the company that was famous for their two piece removable top sad irons both in full size and child's.  This was their attempt to change with a changing world.  I do not think they made it as this is the only one I have seen.  Nice and different!

Vintage Electri IronMary Proctor Single Post Never Lift Electric Iron The collector cut the cord off this one so it would not get in the way of the look.  I remember when common wisdom from iron collectors recommended or advocated this approach.  I never saw any mention of going to the trouble of gently taking them off  if you found them offensive or bothersome---just the wack them off method.  Today it is taboo to cut them.  If you are one of the believers in leaving the cord on, I can set you up with a good replacement for this.  I did save extras.  The iron itself, with a built in "trivet"---different!

Vintage Electri IronL F & C "Universal"  Electric Iron This is a nice early patented iron with an interesting trivet I am not familiar with.  There is lots of info on the iron and trivet, and note the iron is set up to accept a curling iron as well.  It has an interesting detachable handle design as well.

The trivet was also made for a double purpose so the iron could be used as a hotplate / cooker.  When you remove the handle the iron can set into the trivet upside down, allowing it to be used for other purposes besides just ironing.  Be sure to look at all the pictures.
