Special Purpose Antique Sad Irons
Dressmakers & Specialty Irons

antique glove formGlove Maker's Iron Forms   These glove forms are extremely graphic and almost cross the line into folk art.  These would have been used in a glove factory and were clamped onto the edge of the work table and steam heated.  The name they are marked with appears to be Italian, which makes sense if you think of fine Italian leathers, but they are also marked “Pat Apld For” so perhaps they were used in a US glove-making factory.  There is a small break in the casting of the "holder but it still holds the form securely and clamps to the table as it should.

antique egg ironEgg Iron Oval Form   This Egg Iron is for ironing the "puff" or "poof" areas of garments and things like puffy curtains.  The head is a large round ended egg shape.  The tapered wooden handle is also a great form, and in very nice condition as well.  Handles like this were designed to fit into a stand or base of wood or metal much like a hardie hole on an anvil so that it could be used in the upright fixed position.  Nice!

antique patented sleeve / seam ironSweeny Patented Polishing / Seam Iron   This is a very unusual specialty iron designed for polishing and to press seams.  It is marked #4 on the top of the handle, but it is so rare that I think I have only seen a couple of the different sizes.  Deserves to be cleaned!

antique sleeve ironFrench and English Long Handle Sleeve / Seam Irons   These were used for final finishing of the day's outfits in those pesky hard to reach areas like arm-pits, shoulder areas and the like.

On the left is a teardrop English version with the Colebrookdale logo on top.  Plain, simple, utilitarian, reserved if you will.  And on the right is one that is identified as French, with flowery decorations and a warm appealing look to it.  Kind of like the difference between a warm beer at the pub with the boys, and a nice glass of wine in the bistro watching the girls go by.
