Spade Shaped Little Irons
The childrens' irons on this page at first glance might be mistaken for their typical full-size counterparts, but their diminutive size and delicacy puts these antique child-size clothing irons in a special class of their own.
What could make a youngster of yesteryear feel more grown up or more important than being allowed to iron her doll clothes, her hair ribbons, or even the family clothing with her very own "real" iron, side by side with her Mom! And how better to learn the fine points of someday providing her own future family with a wrinkle-free wardrobe than by being taught the lesson in the guise of childhood play.
Iron manufacturers of the day of course saw the marketing potential here with this younger audience, and like today's entrepreneurs they produced an incredible array of different choices for the child, and her Mom, to chose from. Each manufacturer wanted their iron to be distinctive and appealing. Take a look at the different handle styles. Look at the differences in the ways the bases are designed. Note the way the manufacturers decorated them and marked them in interesting ways with names and numbers that were sure to attract attention then, and still do with antique iron collectors and antique toy / doll / and bear collectors today.

Three Different Child-Size Irons All three of these are child-size but each one different from the next. The one on the left is marked with the Roman Numeral I on the base. The one on the right has a nicely contoured handle cast as all one piece with the base. And that is original silver paint on it. The bottom one has a tri-bump ridged handle design and a nicely cast thin base. The variety of these little irons is almost endless!

2 Different ACW Child-Size Irons The A.C. Williams Co. of Ravenna, Ohio manufactured a whole line of irons back around the turn of the 20th century. Here are two of their child-size block handle irons, one measuring 3 inches in length and the other 3 3/4 inches. The smaller one is the actual iron that was pictured in Politizer's Tuesday's Children book on little irons, and comes with authentication written by Judy Politizer. Both of these nickel plated little irons are marked ACW and the larger one has the number 1 on it as well. Antique "V.C. Struve" Child's Iron This is one little iron that I have never seen before. Apparently German in origin it measures just over 4 inches in length. The casting on the top is great, with bold letters indicating the maker going in all three directions and emphasizing the triangular shape of the base. The handle construction indicates an early manufacture. This is a really handsome antique iron! Click for Pic

3 Block Grip Irons Marked I, II, and III These three little irons make a great set. Note the fine casting and definition of the block grips and the Roman numerals on the bases. These children's irons were manufactured by the renown J & E Stevens Company who made children's cast iron stoves and mechanical banks in addition to their line of children's iron, and their craftsmanship was always second to none. These irons measure about 2 7/8 inches, 3 inches and 3 1/4 inches. Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic

The "Gem" Iron by The Stevens Mfg. Co. This little iron was one of several made by this manufacturer of children’s cast iron toys, who also made mechanical banks and cast iron toy stoves. Their casting standards were second to none. The wood grip of the handle of this little iron has been replaced---the originals were more tapered and contoured---but the iron is nice nonetheless and it exhibits a certain “make-do” charm.
