Children's Laundry Toys
Salesman
Sample / Patent Model or Toy Wooden Washing Machine Over the
years I have owned and sold dozens of toy child size
washers, including a number of Patent model washers. I have had ones very
similar to this example, but never this exact same configuration. It has a
few differences which lead me to believe it is a model or salesman sample rather
than just a toy.
The first difference is the quality of the hinges and fittings. They are castings rather than just stamped steel or plain brass hinges. It is the same for the way the base was made. The typical model has little fittings the legs slide into, not this removable triangular base with cast metal corners. The top gear mechanism is also different and more detailed than the more typical and common toy washers you see. It to has cast parts.
Looking inside another difference I see is the set-up for the agitator. The typical toy has only four pegs while this one has 6. And lastly is the way the inside and bottom are machined with ridges just like a full size washer would have been. And probably a feature not called for in a toy. An interesting note is that there is evidence of this having been tested and used with soap residue in the cracks.
Ok, now with all of that being said I believe this is either a patent model, or a salesman sample as opposed to simply a toy washer. It is just too nice, and too detailed to be just a toy or a more expensive toy than thetypical toy you see.
Very Nice, and a super display piece!!

Very Good......$995.00 SOLD!
A.C.
Gilbert "LaVelle" Child's Laundry Set A.C. Gilbert is known as
the inventor of the Erector Set, but at some point he apparently decided to venture
into the line of "girls" toys as well. There is a note included with this
set, written by our consignor, that goes into more detail about this. This
set includes a metal washtub and washboard, clothespins and an umbrella-style clothesline,
two different ironing boards, and of course a little metal iron. All that
remains of the original box is the part of the lid with the pictorial label.
Children's toys like this are a bittersweet reminder of what it was to grow up in
a different time and place than the world we live in now!

Good+ .... $48.00
Arcade
Cast Iron "Thor" Toy Washing Machine These are usually associated
with the Victorian era Doll houses that well to do little girls played with back
in the 20's or so when Arcade was making such things. It stands about 4" tall, and
is in pretty good condition. It is clearly marked Arcade on the bottom, and
the Thor decal is nice. Mom probably had a full size one down in the
basement or had moved up to the new Maytag that was coming onto the market.
There does not seem to be an agitator in the bottom if there was supposed to be
one there.

Toy
Wash Tub / Stand and scrub Board Think about it. Toys for
little girls to give them a sense of what they will be or should be doing later
when they are grown up. What do little girls get today? Good for displaying
small irons on. The tub is approx 6" long and all told stands about 8" tall

American
Sample Size Horseshoe Brand Wringer This is an early example
and may well be a salesman sample of a laundry wringer as opposed to a toy.
The wringer is marked with all the info from full size wringers you see. Note
that this is not an Anchor Brand, but rather an American. I am not sure when
one bought out the other, but know you see more Anchor brand ones that American.
