Antique Charcoal Irons
Lovely Japanese Charcoal Iron with Swivel Chimney This Oriental iron is extremely unique in design. Note the decorative and artistic casting of the heat shield handle base and the door of the rear damper. Check out the half-circle swivel latch to secure the top closed. And probably the most unusual feature is the removable chimney, which could swivel left or right to accommodate the lone ironer who happened to be a southpaw, or could remove altogether so you didn't have to call in the chimney sweep. Very Good ..... $295.00
Charcoal Iron from Singapore This brass charcoal iron is nicely marked with Oriental characters on the back. The hook on the front would lock it closed or swing open to allow the hinged lid to be lifted to refuel it. Click for Pic Click for Pic BCM-85
Good+ ..... $50.00
Japanese Charcoal Iron with Tall Chimney This iron is a variation in style of the one above. The body looks to be double layer sheet steel sides with a cast sole and cast top. The chimney swivels and acts as the latch as well. It could use a good cleaning and is priced accordingly. Click for Pic Click for Pic ML-CI-IJ-2

3 Antique Oriental Pan Irons These antique irons were used in the Orient for ironing silk kimonos and other garments. They were heated by putting burning charcoal in the "pan" and running the flat bottom surface over the fabric. Here are three different versions. The unhandled one is brass and very large and impressive---it is nearly 7" in diameter. The one in the middle looks to be copper, or an alloy with copper, and it has a beautiful carved wooden handle. The dark one is also brass with a nice rich patina, and it has a bamboo handle. Click for Pic Click for Pic ML-CI-I-6
All Excellent ..... $60.00 each
Korean / Oriental Pan Irons These antique irons were used for ironing silk kimonos and other garments in the persons home counrty, or to iron their denim and work clothes here in the US where they relocated. This type of iron is seen or found quite often here on the west coast, seen infrequently on the east coast, and in the Mid west they are still using them for or call them ladles for the soup.
They were heated by putting burning charcoal in the "pan" and running the flat bottom surface over the fabric. These undecorated versions are usually associated with Korea, and the heavier cast versions are typically Chinese. Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic

Large Indonesian Charcoal Iron Marked "SAMANI" This charcoal heated box iron is cast brass or bronze rather than cast iron, and it has a wide band of elaborate floral and scrollwork decoration cast into the sides and back all the way around. The shape of this iron is really interesting. It is large and particularly broad, having a width of about 5 1/2 inches across at the back. It has a thin pointed base characteristic of irons from this part of the globe. What is really unusual is that it does not have what we typically think of as a chimney to exhaust the smoke. Instead it is cast so that it looks like the top is bent or folded up on one side to create an opening. Pity the left-handed ironer with this one but I guess you weren't supposed to be left-handed back then anyway. The word "SAMANI" is cast into the underside of the pushed up part of the lid, but I have no idea what that means. Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic ML-CI-I-5
Very Good ..... $95.00
Unusual Charcoal Iron and Matching Trivet with "Bat" Logo This iron is really unusual! I have seen a lot of charcoal irons but this is not one I have ever seen before. Cast into the underside of the hinged lid is the figure of a bat and the words "Regd Trade Mark". The matching trivet has the same logo and the same writing. I have no clue whose trade mark that is, who the manufacturer was, or even what country it originates from. The only other clue might be the markings on the hinged damper cover at the back---again the bat image and then what look to be Oriental characters. Definitely a curiosity, and in super condition with nearly 100% of the nickel plating remaining. Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic ML-CI-I-7
Excellent ..... $395.00
Oriental Charcoal Iron I'm not 100% sure that this iron is Oriental but it does resemble other Asian irons I'm familiar with. The only marking on is is "N212". The latching mechanism is interesting. The handle support looks to have been repaired. BCM-292
Fair ..... $25.00
