Charcoal Irons

Long Neck Fat Swan IronLong Neck Fat Swan Charcoal Iron   This is a great looking charcoal iron.  The Swan latch is unusual, and the full loop wooden handle is a feature not often seen.  One side of the handle support is marked "H" and the other "R".  I am not sure what this represents, but it is not typical.

Flott Charcoal IronFlott Charcoal Iron   This charcoal iron has a logo of a Barracuda going through a loop that  I have seen on Feldmeyer type gas irons, so they must have made a range of irons over a period of time.  The top was cracked at one point and repaired.  It has an interesting look to it.  Nice!!

Venus Patent Charcoal Irons2 Different "Venus Patent" Charcoal Irons   These are both Hungarian irons.  On the left is the "Venus II".  This is a great design charcoal iron that incorporates all sorts of "cutting edge" ideas to make ironing easier and more efficient.  One almost needs a degree in mechanical engineering to figure out the latch in the front.  The top opens to load it with fuel and the bottom hinges open to empty the ashes out.  To open it you lift the knob and turn 1/4 turn in one direction and the top latch releases.  You then have to turn the knob a 1/2 turn in the opposite direction and the bottom latch releases.  To close it back up you go back and forth till it goes into place.  Simple but complicated!

There is a lot of info about the iron cast into the top and it looks great. All of the small cast points in the bottom must have been designed for heat transfer and air flow. An elegant solution to an age old problem of getting coal to burn cleanly.  The designer was so sure of himself that he felt no need to incorporate a chimney into the design.  I wonder if it worked as planned.

On the right is the slightly smaller version simply called the "Venus".  The overall design is similar, and from the inside the bottom "grate" consisting of the cast points looks the same.  But on this model the bottom does not hinge open---to get rid of the ash you have to dump it out the back.  Thus the latch is much less complicated and actually more graphic, being designed with a weighted Venus (I assume) head.

They make a handsome pair!

Vulcan Patent Charcoal Iron"Vulcan Patent" Charcoal Iron   This is a variation on the theme of the Venus patent irons above.  Was it made by the same company or by a competitor / copier?  The double hinge "bottom dump" latching mechanism is the same as that of the Venus II.  There is an old repair to the top and it is quite a bit rougher in condition than the two Venus irons above.  But unusual!

One of a Kind Decorated Charcoal IronOne of a Kind Decorated Charcoal Iron   A perfect example of "a picture is worth a thousand words".  I'm left speechless by it.  It's "decorated" I guess would be the proper description, with applied silver and turquoise garnish / beads, brass chain, and who knows what else.  It's ............. different!  I can confidently say that it is the only one known, and although I don't know the exact details of its origin I do know a little of it's history.

If you think you have seen it before that's because this is the second time I am selling this iron.  It once belonged to Edna and A.H. Glissman, collectors extraordinaire and authors of one of the first books ever written for iron collectors.   It was one of the highlights of their collection and proudly displayed in a corner by itself.  Al Russell bought this iron at the Glissman auction we handled a number of years ago.  He thought it was special---I'm sure you will too!

Vintage Charcoal IronUnusual Oriental Charcoal Iron w/ Matching Trivet W/ "Bat" Logo   This iron is really unusual!  I have seen a lot of charcoal irons but this is not one I have ever seen before.  Cast into the underside of the hinged lid is the figure of a bat and the words "Regd Trade Mark".  The matching trivet has the same logo and the same writing.  I have no clue whose trade mark that is, who the manufacturer was, or even what country it originates from.  The only other clue might be the markings on the hinged damper cover at the back---again the bat image and then what look to be Oriental characters.  Definitely a curiosity, and in super condition with nearly 100% of the nickel plating remaining.

The Workwell Charcoal Iron"The Workwell" Charcoal Iron   I guess it did---Work well.  Or as well as could be expected given the fuel source.  This is a good looking charcoal iron from Nova Scotia.  It's in great condition and there is lots of info written on the heat shield with the Halifax location and the name "Scipio Charcoal Supplies".  Under the heat shield, cast into the top, is where it reads "Workwell Patent".  Nice!
