Antique Box Irons / Slug Heated Irons

Antique Box IronIron Swing Gate with Hook Latch Box Iron   This primitive box iron has a very nice decorative swing hook to lock the back door.  The blacksmith / maker split the piece of iron and made a stylized curl in addition to the hook to act as the opener / lock.  A nice touch!

Antique Box IronUnusual Iron Swing Gate Box Iron   This early iron has nicely formed uprights, and a nice design "turn key" lock on the back door.   The interesting part is that typically the door is hinged on the opposite side---this one would swing open toward rather than away from the right handed ironer.  I can't recall ever seeing another that opened in this direction.  Perhaps specially made for a left-handed person????

Antique Box IronBlacksmith made French Box Iron W/ Split / Fan Tail Rear Handle Support   This iron is very early and has a very unusual handle support design.  It is blacksmith made and the maker recognized the dilemma of a single post being weak or wobbly and solved the problem by splitting the post and providing lots of handle support area with the fan tails acting as a base or platform. Note the way he also turned and flattened the front support as well.  The swing hook on the side is very nicely done too.  The inside of the iron looks decorative, but is actually the maker's way of increasing the heat transfer, and giving it an artistic flare with the curly cue design you see.  A nice iron!!

Antique Box IronPrimitive Iron Box Iron w/ Swing Gate   This is an early primitive European box iron.  It is a slab construction with pins and rivets holding the top to the bottom and sides.  Note the amount of work that went into hand forming the multisided handle supports.  The handle has some worm holes, but is solid and OK.  The hook and gate are nice as well and it has its original slug.
