Antique Box Irons / Slug Heated Irons

Decorated
Brass Box IronDecorated Brass Box Iron   This is a really nicely done brass box iron with lift gate door.  The engraving is well done and covers the top and edges of the iron.  The wooden handle is very well done as well.  The rear door operates as it should but there is a small difference in the "track" or guide from side to side.  This is one of the nicest decorated irons in this collection.

Antique Brass Box IronDecorated & Dated Brass Box Iron  This is a nice looking small brass box iron.  It is engraved on the side with the date of 1797 and there is other etched decoration that is very "folky" and primitive in style, but very creative with an intricate pattern of zig zag designs.  The door at the rear is missing but a very appealing iron!

Antique Brass Box IronLarge Brass Box Iron w/ Unusual Handle Support Design   This lift gate brass box iron has an unusual handle support for the front post.  It looks to me like it is original, but might be a very early repair.  The maker has applied an iron triangle to the front post, and then attached that to the iron.  Note the chamfer of the brass body at the edge and how it ends at the point the iron begins, indicating it is original.   It is a large iron with great presence!  It has an interesting look to it.  Nice!!

European
Brass Box IronEuropean Brass Box Iron  I’m not sure of the exact country this iron originates from, but our consigner indicated it was Portuguese.  In any case its styling is certainly 19th Century European.  It has a rather unusual latch for the rear door---somebody’s slightly different idea.  The brass body has great patina and it is complete with its perfectly shaped slug.
