Antique Detachable
Handle
Sadirons and Flatirons
Most are 5 -7" long and weigh 4-7 lbs each.
A note on shipping: I ship most irons in fixed rate P O Priority Mail boxes. There are two sizes of these boxes available now that ship for $13 or $16 to anywhere in the US. One, two or sometimes even three or four irons can fit in the larger fixed rate box making shipping quite reasonable. The International fixed rates are $46 or $60 w/ a 20 lb weight limit.

"Challenge"
3 Sad Iron Set w/ Harper Patent Handle
This is a nice and
an unusual 3 piece set of detachable handle sad irons. Each iron is a
different size. At first glance this set of irons looks very much like
the L F & C Thermo Cell irons, but it is by the Geneva, Illinois firm
of Howell, who was a large and well known maker of irons and fluters. But it
utilizes a Harper patent handle, so there was apparently some connection between
Harper and Howell.
I imagine that with the logo "It holds the Heat" they
too were inferring they had some new and wonderful secret material under the
metal housing that retained heat better than anything else, and thus named their
line of irons "Challenge". It is a 1907 patent, so it predates the
LF & C irons that are similar.

Variation
of Mrs. Potts Style Sad Irons
These actually look very
close to one of Mrs. Potts patent ideas for a center mount handle, but they
are quite sleek compared to most that you see. The irons are faintly marked
with some info under the handle and cast into the body, but it is hard to make
out. They are finely made, in nice condition, and for the observant a
bit different from the norm.

W.
H. C. Patent Sad Iron Set
This is a nice 3 piece set, another variation on the theme
of Mrs. Potts style sad irons. Eric Marshall, who is doing a great deal
of research on this style iron, indicated that the W. H. C. stands for Wrightsville
Hardware Co. of Pennsylvania, not the William Howell Co. as I initially assumed.
It is a very unusual latch mechanism, and unlike the typical
Mrs. Potts irons that you see or find. It is a very secure and positive
locking system. To use you start the handle 90 degrees from the final
orientation. You then twist it 90 degrees and it positively locks into
place. To release lift the knob and turn till it comes loose. There
is a little finger icon that serves as a directional. It is a really neat
design!

Pack's
Patent "Welt-Platte" Detachable Handle Iron Set
This detachable handle iron is yet another example of the ingenious thought
that went into designing mechanisms for effectively latching and releasing sadiron
handles from the bases of antique irons. This one is pretty simple but
unique. There are three different size / weight bases included, marked
1, 2 and 3. Another good-looking well-made European (German, I believe)
sadiron in really nice condition that only needs some light cleaning to make
it a standout in any collection!

Weida
Patent "Swing Back" Detachable Handle Iron
The Weida iron is
marked with the patent date
of March 12, 1870 and this is the version where you simply swing the "lock"
out of the way so the handle can swing back out of the way while the iron was
being heated. The up side with this design was that you didn't have to
worry about breaking off the latch release lever that was the fatal flaw of
his earlier version. The down side was that I can't figure out how you
would latch the handle back into place after you heated the iron without burning
your fingers. Hummmmmm...........

European
Iron with Unusual Detachable Handle Mechanism
This is another strange and unusual detachable
handle iron. I believe it's German and it is extremely well made.
The handle latching mechanism is incredibly well-built and precision-made---some
would even say over engineered! Take a look at both pictures. This
is beautiful iron!

Sensible
No. 90 Patented Detachable Handle Iron
There
were a whole host of patents issued in the late 1800's and early 1900's for
all sorts of mechanisms for detachable handle irons. The idea was to figure
out something that would let you easily remove the handle while the iron was
heating, then put it back on quickly and securely so you could get back to the
task at hand without dropping the iron on your toe. This is a really good
looking iron and it's in great condition to boot. The handle latches securely
and it doubles as a lifter to use if you needed to lift up a stove lid or just
move the iron around the stovetop with actually latching on the handle.
You'll love
the condition of this one! It is as close to mint as one will find.
