Rodier's
Patent Jack Plane Louis Rodier was issued a couple different patents
for the design of his line of patented planes. The first in 1879, and another
in 1885. This jack plane size incorporates the leaf spring frog adjustment
and star wheel adjuster from his earlier patent. From what I have read he
was only in business selling this plane for approximately 5 years or so and was
in business with a fellow named Laflin.
This plane is in very condition and measures 15". The cutter is marked Buck which is proper. The handle and knob are very nice. There is no rust or pitting to speak of and it is just a bit dirty It will clean up to be fine. The throat is perfect and there are no casting cracks or other damage. The adjuster is operational as well..

Kinney
Patent Plane This unusual looking plane was patented in Canada in 1880.
Roger Smith had an unmarked one in his first book, and was able to positively identify
it in his second book. An interesting design with a crimper like wheel set
in the tail to rip the material to proper width. Different.

Morris Patent Planes The patent for this unusual plane was issued to
Ellis H. Morris in 1870. They are rare and hard to find planes which were
offered in three sizes. These planes were manufactured by the Sandusky Tool
Co during the 1870's.
The shorter plane is 16" long and marked in front of the cutter in the base of the body with the patent date and other info. The handle looks proper, but is attached with very new looking screws. The horn has been repaired on both planes handles. The wedges on both planes are made of a light colored hardwood, and look proper but may be replacements. The shorter plane was purchased in the early 80's from Dave Paling, the well known California antique tool dealer who recently passed away. It has been sitting in a private collection since that time. Rare and unusual, and very presentable in its present state.
The longer jointer plane pictured is 21" long and the largest of the 3 sizes made. It is marked in front of the cutter in the base of the body with the patent date as well. It has no reportable damage other than the repaired tote and is in very nice original condition.

Davis
Level & Tool Co. Jointer Plane The Davis Tool and Level Co. were in
the plane making business for a relatively short period of time. The earlier
designs were slightly different from this one and so this is a later model.
They only made bench size planes for a period of about 12 years, and their planes
featured a lateral adjustment that Stanley did not introduce on their line for a
few more years. Overall this plane is in nice condition but has seen
use. It is 22 1/2 inches long. There is about 70% of the original japanning
left, and the wood looks good but might not be original. The top of the tote has
a repair as well. The screw holding the cap to the cutter is a replacement
and the cutter is pitted such that it is very hard to read the mark, which looks
to be D. R. Barton in the circle trademark.
The sticker on this plane indicates I sold this to the collector in the early 90's along with a pile of new tools. This fellow started his collecting back in the late 60's but did not start concentrating on woodworking tools and planes until a few years later. He was pretty prolific in his early days, but not real focused until the 80's. I still fondly remember the first day I met him when he walked by with a plane I had sold earlier that day and he told me it was the best and most expensive plane he had ever bought. I had paid $80.00 and sold it for 125.00. He paid nearly 800. I never made that mistake again, and he and I had a great relationship for the next 10-15 years.

Buckeye
Smooth Plane This is a tough plane to find these days.
The tag on it indicates I first sold it to him back in 87 at a street fair here
in CA. Those were the good old days. 1.50 gas, tools were still falling
out of every garage and yard sale. Tool Buyers were abundant, Flea markets were
a primary source for antiques instead of Walmart and Chinese castoffs, there was
no internet, no eBay, and certainly no internet rip-offs. And although
there might have been low-lifes lurking about they were mostly localized to their
home towns / states and not really a threat or worry. Life was great.
This plane is all original and in nice condition.

Union
X 3 C Smooth Plane This is a nice looking plane with good wood and
a nice sole. There is some light pitting or texture on the sides. The
paint is original and good. A tough plane to find.

Union
X #4 3/8 Smooth Plane This was the Union Tool Co. contribution to the
rare and unusual plane / cutter adjusting idea in an attempt to corner
some of the plane sales market Stanley was gathering up. The patent for this
idea was issued in 1903 and consists of a vertical post w/ 2 locking nuts to adjust
the cutters depth of cut. These planes were offered in sizes from the #0 (#1) through
the #8 size, with the smallest, largest, and odd-ball #'s being the hardest to find.
This # 4 3/8 is closest in size to a Stanley # 4 1/2, the oversize smooth plane Stanley offered. This oversize smooth plane is in very nice original condition with 90% of the original paint or more remaining. There is ever so light pitting on the sides and it was cleaned years ago. The cap iron is marked 4 3/8ths. There is patent info in the base. The Rosewood handle had green paint on it which I removed. I am not sure if it is original to the plane or not. A very nice, and hard to find plane.

Metallic Plane Co. Auburn NY # 9 Block Plane W/ Tailed Cap This is a rare version of one of this companies block planes. I have never seen or had one with the cast iron tail piece intact. The example in Roger Smith's book on the subject has a brass cap which although he fails to identify as being a recast most likely is. I looked through a stack of auction catalogs, and there are the wooden wedge varieties offered, or occasionally ones with a wooden block attached to the top of the cutter, but none of the #9 with the cast tail that I could find. The only other one I have had had the tail broken off, and I was never able to locate a replacement
The condition is fine overall. The cutter is properly marked and so is the side of the plane. There is 80% or better of the original japanning except on the tail as would be expected.
Fine.....$SOLD
Langdon
Miter Box Co 3 1/2" Shoot Board Plane This is an interesting
plane / tool. Langdon was located in Millers Falls Mass. They came in
three sizes I believe, and this is the middle size one with the cutter measuring
3 1/2 inches across the face. I have not owned one of these in close to 20
or so years and tripped over that one at a flea market in KY in the good old days
of driving around in circles trying to turn up things. I never saw it and
literally tripped over it going all the way down as I was scanning the next booth.
I had no idea what it was and had never seen one before. I inspected
it for a while while rubbing my shin and I did end up buying it. I sold that
one to the fellow who owned this one. I remember because after I sold him
mine he wanted me to take it back because it turned out to be the same size as this
one.
That being said I have no real idea if this ones paint is original or not. I am guessing not with that bright green, but really do not know. It was carefully done, and the red and gold seem proper, but that shade green sure is a new one on me. I looked it over pretty good, and it is not hiding any welds or repairs that I can see. The cutters appear to be pretty sharp, and the sole of the plane clean. The adjustable table swings easily.

Birmingham
Tool Co. Patented Jointer Plane This Rare and unusual 21" jointer plane
was made by the Birmingham Plane Manufacturing Co of Birmingham Conn. The
idea for this design of plane was patented by a fellow named Mosher in 1884.
This company was in business for only about 5 years from 1885 on. The Birmingham
Plane Co. made a series of different model or designed planes trying to compete
with Stanley, but these all iron planes are their most desirable models and uniquely
different from most other designs from this era. The Birmingham Tool Co. also
produced a line of transitional and metal bodied planes similar in design to Stanley.
This example is proper and correct in every aspect and is in fine condition. The
throat is nice, and the cutter marked properly. The adjuster is present and
not damaged. Good+.....$SOLD!
Steers #405 Patented Jack Plane The Steers line of patented Metallic planes are very interesting and unusual. The bottom was milled to accept thin strips of Rosewood for the fellows who remembered the good old days of wood to wood planing. This is a later model with a frog design similar to what Stanley offered. Beyond that feature they are remarkably similar to Stanley's line of planes, but far harder to find. This example is in overall nice condition. There are some chips and voids in the wooden sole strips as would be expected. The handle and knob are nice and proper. The cutter is marked and proper. It has a coat of lacquer or linseed oil over it as was thought to be proper in the 60's. It will come off with a simple rinse.
Good+.....$425.00 SOLD!
Unusual #112 Like Scraper Plane The origin and provenance of this plane are a mystery. It appears to be unmarked, and I can not find anything on the cutter either. The body is nicely cast, and the brass adjusting screws have a very fine and nicely done diagonal knurling. The wooden handle and knob are damage free, nicely done and of an undetermined wood. The cutter is 2" wide, and the plane body is 2.5 inches wide, by just under 11" long. Whether it is a patternmakers one of a kind design, or a prototype by an aspiring plane manufacturer we will never know, but it is a very interesting piece, and will be a welcome addition to the advanced collection, if you are not going by numbers. Good+..........$395.00 SOLD
Palmer Storkes Patented Metallic Plane This unusual patented plane is in nice condition with only some minor wear here and there as evidence that it was used. It is 15" long. The sole is corrugated and looks good. The throat has two small nicks. The cutter is marked Buck Brothers and is 7" long with 2" to the slot. The adjuster feature works. There is light pitting on the sides and sole, but nothing major. It is a nice example overall. Good+ ..... $195.00 SOLD!
The cutter is marked Lakeside which was Montgomery Wards house brand name. They had their early planes made for them by Stanley and exhibit all the same characteristics including Rosewood handles. It is equipped with the external frog adjuster and probably dates from the 30's or so from the looks of it. This plane is pretty nice noting a tight crack in the tote.

27"
Bedrock Style Jointer Plane This
is an interesting plane that was professionally made, but I doubt a manufactured
piece. The maker utilized Stanley parts, and liked the looks of the Stanley
Bedrock side rails and mimicked that look here. It is much heavier and more
reinforced than Stanley's models though, and at 27" long longer by a few inches
as well. The sole shows no sign of use, and you can still see the milling
machine marks there. Probably foundry made by a patternmaker or the like.
Interesting.

Unusual Size Core Box Plane This is styled after the rare and unusual
Stanley #56 Core Box Plane. It is in very nice condition. It is marked
on the body #1 Core Box Plane in raised letters in the casting. It is near
identical to the Stanley version but is approx 50% larger in every dimension.

Patented Challenge Planes These are a hard to find and interesting
patented plane. The patent is from just before the turn of the century, and
they were marketed through Tower & Lyon. They were only made for
a few short years and in in limited supply as evidenced by the scant number of times
they appear on the market. Roger Smith put forward the speculation that
they were probably produced in one run in 1899, and that they are quite rare.
I am not sure of 1 production run as ones can be marked differently.
They are scarce and hard to find none the less.
Both of these examples have been repainted. The upper loop supporting the adjuster is the weak point of the design and I think these have been braised / repaired in this area at some point and repainted to make them look better. Given the paint job I can not really see the repair, but the texture and look in this area looks different on both. Perhaps that was by design, but I doubt it. Click for view Click for view
