Cupid Toy Treadle Sewing MachineCupid Toy Treadle Sewing Machine    There are about a dozen variations or different toy treadle sewing machines, both American and European that can be found.  All are pretty rare and were only made in small numbers.  The American made Cupid ranks right up there with the hardest to find from any location.

This example is in super condition.  The decals are some of the best and brightest and most detailed that can be found on any toy treadle sewing machine.  The maker was the Cupid Mfg. Co. and was based in Chicago.  From the look and style I assume these are from shortly after the turn of the century.   Glenda Thomas shows several in her second book from some large collections, none with as nice decals as this and has a bit more info on the company and some of their advertising.

A very nice example that will be sure to be a highlight of any collection.

Eldregette Toy Treadle Sewing MachineEldredgette Child-Size Antique Toy Treadle Sewing Machine    This small toy treadle sewing machine was produced by the National Sewing Machine Co. of Belvedere IL.   They were the outfit that also made the line of cast iron machines named Stitchwell that can be found.  These machines date from just after WWI and into the 20's.  I assume it was the Great Depression that put an end to their manufacture.

Both the Stitchwell, and the Eldredgette are found on this Mission Oak style wood stand.  I assume that you can also find other similar machines by this same firm, like the Wee, American Girl, and all the other Stitchwell look a-likes  that are around but I have never seen or had any of these.

The condition of the machine is very nice.  The name decal is super and the paint has just a few minor chips.  The top has a ruler decal on the front edge and this shows some wear, so we know that this was a played with and loved toy.  A nice example of a hard to find sewing machine, in nice condition.

Ideal Child Size Toy Treadle Sewing MachineIdeal Child-Size Antique Toy Treadle Sewing Machine  The "Ideal Toy Treadle Sewing Machine is a very nice piece of 19th century Americana.

In Glenda Thomas's first book on toy and miniature sewing machines she has one pictured and has a lot of info about the two different manufacturers having made these.   Her research also reveals that well known outfits like Marshall Fields of Chicago were distributers.  The ads she cites are from the late 1890's and include one from the Youths Companion, and the Ladies Home Journal.  She even pictures one of these ads in the back of the book and it shows that this machine sold for the whopping sum of $5.00 when it was first offered.

The condition is very nice.  There is not a lot of decoration, but there never was.  This machine was marketed as not just a toy to be played with, but also a a machine to be used by not only the child, but the mom, or even the servant.  It was a very utilitarian machine and offered that way. The stand is very nicely done, with the name Ideal in cast out or cut out letters like one finds in certain wrenches or other pieces of decorative cast iron from this era. The treadle is especially well done and rivals those in detail and finish found on real treadles from this era.
