19th Century Goffering irons are rarely seen anymore except in long-time collections or in reference books on the subject. This fine example features a perfectly proportioned Queen Anne-tripod footed brass base and a decorative iron standard with numerous embellishments and a finely formed stepped iron barrel. Remarkably, it has survived the years complete with the poker/slug used to heat its barrel. The brass base has not been polished and retains the mellow patina that testifies to its age. This early piece, which stands 9 1/2" tall, is in excellent condition and is sure to add a touch of elegance to any iron collection. Excellent......... SOLD
Goffering Iron With Queen Anne Legs
This is a very unusual miniature brass Queen Anne leg English goffering iron. Typically when little goffers are found they are of the round cast base S-standard style rather than this configuration. The photo makes it look a bit distorted, but believe me it's a great looking piece!
Good + ........ $395.00 SOLD!
Black Blown Glass Slikenstone / Smoothing Stone Black glass rubbing stones are believed to be some of the oldest ironing devices known. These glass irons were used cold on damp material with pressure applied by both hands to remove the wrinkles. This piece is from the long-time Glissman collection.
Excellent ..... SOLD
Unusual Small Flower / Leaf Irons These are the tools that were used in the antique millinery, dressmaking, costume-making, and other assorted fabric trades to make beautiful silk and velvet flowers that adorned the fancy hats and clothing of the day. After the fabric was starched it would have been pressed between the two heated halves of these pressing molds to emboss the design. Typically these brass and iron tools are found in much larger sizes. The smallest one here measures about 1 inch and the largest one about 2.5 inches. All three of these small leaf irons are intricately detailed and make for a great display.
Excellent.................$85.00 each All SOLD
An Assortment of Unusual Hatter's Irons Irons for hats, caps and bonnets are a fascinating sub-category of iron collecting, and antique hatter's irons are sought out not only by iron collectors for display but also by contemporary makers of handmade hats looking for the tools and devices that were used in the last century to do the myriad of specialized jobs associated with their trade. Numerous firms, located primarily in New England, were engaged in producing supplies for the hat industry. Crowns need to be shaped, brims had to be curled, creases needed to be ironed in, felt nap had to be smoothed, and ironing devices that came to be named tollikers, shackles, hatter's shells, etc. were manufactured in the mid to late 1800's to respond to the growing industry. Offered here are an assortment of hatter's irons that were part of the Glissman Iron Collection. Be sure to look at all of the pictures. There are a total of 12 irons, several with moveable flanges, several with double grooves, all are unusual and interesting shapes.
These can be purchased individually for $75-$125 each or save and buy the whole lot for $50 each straight through. SOLD
Brass Movable Front Hat Shackle Iron Hatters' irons come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and forms, each having a special purpose in shaping, smoothing, pressing and curling the various parts of a variety of styles of antique hats. This example is all brass with a wooden handle. There are no markings on it and the brass has a rich, mellow, unpolished patina. Very Good................ $150.00 SOLD
Iron Movable Front Hat Shackle Iron This example is all iron with a nicely formed wooden handle. It is marked 5/8 referencing the size of the curl of the brim it would produce. It has great form, smooth surface, and rich patina. Excellent................ $150.00 SOLD
Another Grouping of Unusual Hatmaking Irons Here is a different selection of unique and interesting hatter's ironing implements. These 4 tollikers are brass and wood and have a great patina. These too were part of the Glissman Iron Collection.
They can be purchased individually for $75-$125 each or save and buy the whole lot for $50 each straight through. SOLD!!
This unusual rectangular shaped iron was made specifically for ironing the felt on billiard tables. It is simple yet impressive in appearance, measuring about 9" long and 5" wide and with a flared bottom and twisted handle. A neat piece!
Antique Billiard / Pool Table Iron
Excellent
..... SOLD!
This English billiard table iron has a great look. I am not sure if the H. J. Davis Co. Ltd of Old Brompton Kent made pool tables or billiard tables as well as the irons to smooth out the felt, but this iron looks great and is nicely done.
Good ........ $195.00
SOLD!
This unusual polishing iron is one of Streeters most sought after irons for collectors. It has the signature Streeter removable handle. But look at how odd the shape of the body is. There are very few of these found, and this one is in super condition.
Mrs. Streeter's #2 "Gem" Polishing Iron
Good ........ $495.00 SOLD!
The Crown 7" Plaiter Iron Plaiting irons are a rare variation of a fluting iron that were used to put pleats instead of ruffles in such things as curtains, kilts, and bed canopies. The North Brothers Catalog from 1912 attempts to list out how simple and easy this device is to use and how useful it will be in the home or shop, but I imagine that by this time or point in history women in the house were starting to dream about other things to do with their time. Images of dancing and having fun like in the roaring 20's or god forbid voting and having a say in what they were or were not going to do were beginning to get in the way of pleating, ironing and other household chores. Phyllis Schafly's worst nightmare was beginning to form way before her time. Perhaps she has one of these as a remembrance of how it use to be, or how she wishes it still was. The 1912 Crown catalog I have lists only the 10" model of these devices, and we have had that size a couple times over the years, but this is the first we have ever seen of a 7" model. We also have one by an entirely different company that must have been bought out by North Brothers some years earlier.
Excellent ..... SOLD!
Collectors of antique irons have dubbed this sleeve iron the "big toe". It's extremely long. It's also extremely thin. I guess the idea was to make it easier to slide it up into those hard-to-reach folds and tucks and pleats of fabric that were all the rage in antique clothing styles. This iron was patented in 1897. One of the largest and most unusual looking sleeve irons made! A difficult iron to find!
"Big Toe" Patented Sleeve Iron with Removable Handle
