The Carver Patent "Majestic" Revolving Box Iron with Fluter  This iron was patented by an enterprising fellow named Horace Carver, who obviously realized he could increase his market share by giving the consumer an array of different choices when it came to choosing an iron.  (Would you like a Carver iron or would you like a Carver iron?)  He made a number of different irons of the same basic design.  All were revolving, slug heated, multi-function irons---but each had slightly different features and each one had a different name, including the "Family Laundry Iron", the "Victor", the "Ladies Friend", the "Economist", and this one, the "Majestic".  The design of this iron was quite complex and must have been fairly expensive to produce judging from how few are found today.  The spring-loaded handle releases to allow the iron to revolve and then lock into position so that ironing could be done on three of the four faces.  The fourth face is a hinged door that could be un-latched by revolving the handle to the appropriate position to allow it to open so the heated slug could be be inserted or removed.  The special feature of the Majestic was that it functioned as a fluting iron as well as a flat iron, with a built-in fluted plate designed into one of the edges.  Without having to have multiple irons one could simply turn the iron on this side and use it on top of a fluting bed to easily switch from flat work to fluting.  This example is in good condition, still retaining its original slug.  Oftentimes when this iron is found the vulnerable tab on the door is broken, but this example is damage-free.  Most of the nickel plating is worn away and there is slight texture to the surface, but overall it displays well.     Excellent ............$495.00    SOLD

Streeter's Magic No. 1 Combination Box Iron / Fluting Iron    Nelson Streeter of Groton, NY was one of the more prolific manufacturers of his day, producing a host of ironing devices including removable handle sad irons, sleeve irons, child-size irons, and an assortment of combination flat / fluting irons.  The  Magic No. 1 is certainly one of his best looking and interesting creations!  This box iron is complete with its heating slug.  When the flatwork and smoothing was done, the ironer could then get on to the more challenging chore of fluting by simply removing the handle / top assembly and laying the specially fitted fluter plate onto the iron base.  The slug would continue to provide the heat needed to roll the ruffle into the dampened and starched fabric.  When the fluting was done, or when the slug needed to be reheated, she could easily use the flange at the end of of the roller handle to safely pick up the fluter plate to remove it for later use, and to remove the slug from the body of the iron.  It was all very well thought out.  As can be imagined with so many parts and pieces these irons are most often found incomplete.  This example is in very good condition with lots of nickel plating remaining on the body, the fluter plate, and the roller and with original black japanning on the top and on the handle of the roller.  The wood handle and the latch are also in excellent condition.  This is another iron that doesn't come along every week!               Very Good .............$425.00       SOLD

Streeter's Sensible Box Iron with Accessory Roller Fluter   Here is another of Nelson Streeter's very practical designs for a combination flat and fluting iron.  This solid bodied box iron is most often found missing it's best feature---the matching fluting plate and roller that were designed with the distinctive V-notch on the front and ridge on the underside to sit securely on the heated base once the flatwork had been done and it was time to do the fluting.  Because the body acted as a heating slug, the fluter plate stayed clean and soot-free.  When it was time to put the base back on the stove to reheat it, either the tab at the tip of the roller or the one at the back of the lid could be used as a lifter.  This antique iron is marked with a patent date of Sept. 19, 1876.  Overall it is in nice condition and although it appears that the wooden handle has been replaced it still displays well.         Good+............$250.00       SOLD

Rare Revolving Myers Patent Combination Flatiron and Polisher     Rare, Rare, Rare!  Frederick Myers patented a series of irons and is best known for his combination fluter / sadirons, of which there are probably five or six different ones, including the Goat Fashion Fluter and the Combination Embossing / Fluting iron with its interchangeable plates.  The common combo irons turn up pretty regularly.  The Goat is represented in most major collections but is otherwise scarce.  There are only a handful of the Embossing irons known.  And this revolving combination iron by Myers ranks right up there in rarity with those two.  In fact, I have seen or know of fewer of this iron than those other two.

The US patent office granted Myers patent #133245 on Nov. 19, 1875 for this iron.

This iron is in really super condition.  The body is nickel plated and very nice with just minor spots.  It revolves / rotates with one side being a flatiron and the other side being a polisher.  The spring is strong and it locks securely as it should.  It appears that the entire iron body and handle were originally nickeled, and then Myers painted the handle and latching mechanism to create a contrasting effect.  The black that you see is original, and I would say approximately 80% remains.  The grip is cast iron as well, and ribbed.  The body is almost heart-shaped.  It has a very pleasing look.

One of the rarest of American patented irons!  I don't believe any have ever been offered in any of the iron collector club meeting auctions.  This is an opportunity to fill out the Myers, the revolving, and / or the combo portions of your collection with just one purchase that won't likely be available again for a long time to come.

Very Good   ........ $4500.00       SOLD!

The 5" Figural Swan Iron    The 5" swan iron is always a favorite not just of iron collectors, but of anyone who appreciates the beauty and rarity of figural cast iron antiques.  Authentic 5" swans don't come up for sale very often---reproductions of these irons are offered up on Ebay and elsewhere, but there is no comparison between those repops and an original.  This example is guaranteed old and authentic.

And it is in super condition!  That is original gold wash finish you are seeing here.  And note the strong detailing in the casting of the feathers, the eyes, the tail, etc.  Many times these large swan irons are found with the beaks having been broken off and / or repaired.  The beak on this bird is 100% right.

These 5" swans are very graphic in appearance, and very appealing.  Highly recommend!

"Eureka" by Barr Electric Mfg. Co. Sad Iron   This is a very early electric iron by an obscure maker in Cleveland, Ohio.  I found one reference from a 1907 magazine ad extolling the benefits and superior performance of this new product.  The picture in that ad had a cord that looked a bit different, and it was probably an improvement over the direct drive hook-up that this version is sporting.  The washer in the corner is marked with the name "Eureka", as is the top brass plaque giving the voltage and location.  The most interesting feature is that the bottom of this iron has a polisher-like waffle texture surface.  I have never seen this iron before although we did have a Tailor Size by the same maker that sold very well a while back.  .  A must-have for the complete electric iron collection.   As an added bonus this rare iron comes with its rare marked cast iron trivet.

Good   ........ $695.00     SOLD!

Hayruss Patented Cordless Electric Iron   I am not sure if this qualifies as the first cordless electric iron, but it is certainly one of the first and most definitely one of the weirdest looking.  The patent was issued in 1934 to a Robert Roller. He must have sold the rights to the Hayruss firm from PA.  Note that the trivet / base is cast iron, and has a series of rollers for ease of placement and removal.   And probably put there on purpose to satisfy the inventor's ego / desire to have his name incorporated into the design. It has neat little pivoting wings built into the sides to make insertion an easy task as well.  This whole affair is quite different from the patent drawings, but the idea is the same.

It is set up with a special plug with two arms that seat into the sockets provided on the trivet / base.  It looks like it could also be used with a standard cord if so desired.  In reading the patent he presented this idea as making it applicable to most any electric iron with a similar plug at the rear.  A neat touch.  The iron and the trivet carry the same Hayruss name, so this is not an aftermarket marriage, this is the real deal.

There is some damage to the plastic parts.  The plastic plug that fits into the iron is cracked and has been repaired with black tape.  The plastic housing for the plug on the trivet / stand is cracked as well.  It is still solid and not loose, but it is cracked.
